PE M/D A/S - Three Steps with Exponents

PE M/D A/S - Three Steps with Exponents - How It Works - Video

Example 1

Example 1:

Remember multiplication and division are the same magnitude as well as addition and subtraction. In this example we have to look inside the parenthesis first.

40 - (32 * 4)

=> 40 - (9 * 4) - Exponents

=> 40 - (36) - Multiplication

=> 4 - Subtraction

4 is our final answer.

Example 2

Example 2:

Remember multiplication and division are the same magnitude as well as addition and subtraction. In this example we have to look inside the parenthesis first.

20 ÷ (32 + 1)

=> 20 ÷ (9 + 1) - Exponents

=> 20 ÷ (10) - Addition

=> 2 - Division

2 is our final answer.

Example 3

Example 3:

Remember multiplication and division are the same magnitude as well as addition and subtraction. In this example we have to look inside the parenthesis first.

18 ÷ 32 - (3 + 4)2

=> 18 ÷ 32 - 72 - Addition

Here we can either square both numbers at the same time or different steps because there aren't anymore parenthesis.

=> 18 ÷ 9 - 72 - Addition

=> 18 ÷ 9 - 72 - Exponents

=> 18 ÷ 9 - 49 - Exponents

=> 2 - 49 - Division

=> -47 - Subtraction

-47 is our final answer.

Example 4

Example 4:

Remember multiplication and division are the same magnitude as well as addition and subtraction. In this example we have to look inside the parenthesis first.

100 - 2(32 - 4)

=> 100 - 2(9 - 4) - Exponents

=> 100 - 2(5) - Subtraction

Remember here there is an invisible multiplication sign in between the 2 and the 5.

=> 100 - 10 - Multiplication

=> 90 - Subtraction

90 is our final answer.

Example 5

Example 5:

Remember multiplication and division are the same magnitude as well as addition and subtraction. In this example we have to look inside the parenthesis first. Since we have two, we can do both at the same time or different steps.

(3 + 4)2 - (4 * 2)

=> 72 - (4 * 2) - Addition

=> 72 - 8 - Multiplication

=> 49 - 8 - Exponents

=> 41 - Subtraction

41 is our final answer.
